What to Discuss Before a Hair Color Appointment

Help clients and colorists have a clearer consultation about goals, current hair, maintenance, timing, and budget.

A useful color consultation is a two-way conversation about what the client wants and what the colorist needs to understand before recommending a service. The goal is not to promise a particular shade from a photograph. It is to agree on a realistic plan and the next decision together.

Describe the goal in everyday terms

Ask what the client wants to look or feel different, how noticeable a change they have in mind, and which parts of a reference image matter most to them. A photo may show lighting, styling, or filters that affect its appearance. Discuss a range of acceptable outcomes so the provider knows what the client would consider a good result and what would feel too far from the goal.

Review relevant color history

The colorist may need to understand recent and previous color services, at-home products, or treatments that could affect the plan. Invite the client to be as accurate as they can and explain that missing history can make recommendations less certain. The discussion should stay focused on service planning. Avoid diagnosing hair or scalp conditions through marketing copy or a casual message.

Talk through time, upkeep, and cost

Ask how much appointment time the client can set aside and what kind of maintenance they are comfortable with between visits. Clarify which steps, products, or follow-up appointments may affect the total quote. If the salon cannot estimate accurately before seeing the starting point, say so and explain how an in-person consultation will narrow the estimate. Do not imply that a single appointment can achieve every reference.

Agree on the plan and next step

Before booking, summarize the intended service, the questions still open, and what the client should expect next. If the colorist recommends a different appointment or a staged approach, explain the reason in understandable terms and let the client decide whether it fits. Confirm the booking details in writing when possible, including the service name and the route to contact the salon if plans change.

Key points

  • Discuss the desired change and what matters in reference images.
  • Share relevant service history so the provider can assess the plan.
  • Ask about appointment time, upkeep, and what changes the quote.
  • Confirm the agreed service and unresolved questions before booking.
